After completing military service, veterans can have a difficult time finding employment when returning to civilian life.
Former naval officer Tom Wolfe’s Out of Uniform, Second Edition (University of Nebraska Press/Potomac Books, 2018) is designed to help all transitioning military personnel, regardless of service, branch, rank, rating, time in service, time in grade, or specialty. Although all service members share common denominators, each individual brings something unique to the job market.
Not only does this book cover the basics—search techniques, networking, interview preparation, résumés, and negotiation—it also offers guidance on topics that are often overlooked, specifically the central issues of self-knowledge, interviewing empathy, and the power of questions. This new edition includes a new foreword from the author, updates to 38 of 83 chapters including statistics, web sites, data, and images, and a new chapter on social media.
In addition to the technical guidance, readers will also discover important information in the anecdotes based on the experiences of soldiers, sailors, air force personnel, and marines. Out of Uniform, Second Edition is an invaluable resource for veterans who want to make the most out of their civilian career opportunities.
Tom Wolfe graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, served as a surface warfare officer in the navy, and completed tours of duty as a flag aide, communications officer, and administrative department head. Formerly a senior partner at Career Development Corporation, he provided guidance to separating military personnel for almost thirty years. His columns and articles have appeared regularly in digital and print media, including the Army Wife Network, Military.com, Military Transition News, Stars and Stripes, G.I. Jobs, TAOnline, and Veterans of Modern Warfare.

Not only does it cover the basics—search techniques, networking, interview preparation, resumes, and negotiation—but there is also guidance on additional issues that are often over-looked: specifically the central themes of self-knowledge, interviewing empathy, and the power of questions. The technical and “how to” information is emphasized and made memorable through transition tales, in which the author shares his personal experience as well as that of several of the thousands of service men and women he assisted throughout his recruiting and placement career.

Tom,
I would just like to say thanks for writing Out of Uniform. I was thoroughly impressed with it. I had seen it back in October, finally ordered it in November, sat down and read it all in the last three days, and now only wish I had done all three earlier. I would just like to say thanks for writing Out of Uniform. I was thoroughly impressed with it. I had seen it back in October, finally ordered it in November, sat down and read it all in the last three days, and now only wish I had done all three earlier. Although I decided to separate in March of 2011, got my 214 in January of 2012 and just took a job last week reading the book reaffirmed a lot of what I went through. From the soul searching and wondering to the emotional roller coaster of excitement and let downs to finally waiting for the best/right opportunity and taking the plunge. I especially liked the line on the first page of the preface “I was a babe in the woods.” That’s when you had me hooked; I knew that this was probably written for me.
The book was written in such a way that keeps military members in mind, especially the reassurance that they can do this transition and letting them know that they are challenged by not knowing what industries and jobs are out there for them, but that they must meet the challenge and educate themselves. It gave a great overview of a lot of key information without getting so in the weeds that a military member would get lost with all the foreign ideas. I think everything was right on point, with the right amount of coverage.
I will recommend the book to anyone that I know is transitioning out, even if they are just thinking about transitioning. And especially I will be sure to pass it on to the guys that I know are struggling right now with the separation date looming wondering where to start. The book should be given out at every TAP class to every military member. They deserve better than what they are currently getting; this book has the power to do that.
I only wish that it came out in 2010, I would have felt way ahead.
Thanks again and best wishes for continued success.
Sincerely,
LT John Donovan

Tom,
Your book is amazing. I especially liked chapter 49, which had a list of questions to ask (why is this position available? who will my supervisor be?), and explained the importance of asking the right questions. The salary negotiation tips in one of the later chapters are also spot on. I think every service member transitioning out of the military should be REQUIRED to read this book - there's no question that it's head and shoulders much better quality than any books currently…Tom,

The salary negotiation tips in one of the later chapters are also spot on. I think every service member transitioning out of the military should be REQUIRED to read this book - there's no question that it's head and shoulders much better quality than any books currently recommended by ACAP resource centers. I think you've got a great volume of knowledge contained in your work and that it should definitely be shared with others. Let me know however I can help you, I think your book is awesome and I wish I had access to it years ago when I transitioned to the civilian job market!

“With the exception of leaving civilian life for the military, no professional change is more cathartic or challenging than the transition out of uniform. Key for success is preparation, both mental and emotional. Tom Wolfe provides the indispensable guide to help you both prepare and succeed.”
--Lt. Gen. Dan Christman, USA (ret), Former Superintendent, U S Military Academy
"Tom has done a superb job of relating job search experiences and has created a tremendous resource for those leaving military service, as well as providing valuable tools that can be used throughout one's career. The book is full of practical guides for the entire job search and is a valuable reference to have on the shelf."
--John Welch, President and CEO, USEC, Inc, Navy veteran
“In Out of Uniform, Tom Wolfe has leveraged his years of experience to create a clear road map to navigate the complex and challenging world of the corporate selection process. As a military veteran myself and one who has spent twenty-five years interviewing candidates, this content would have been a valuable resource for me when beginning my transition from the service.”
--Bob Ravener, EVP and Chief People Officer, Dollar General Corporation, Navy veteran
"Everyone leaving military service needs to read Out of Uniform It is filled with excellent advice, practical guidance, insightful stories, and tricks-of-the-trade. Although Tom has written this book to assist veterans, most of the content is equally appropriate and valuable to anyone who is in career transition and job hunting."
